
Alina Șerban is a filmmaker, playwright, and actress. The first in her family to finish high school, she graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, becoming the first Roma woman to direct both theatre and film in Romania. Alina is known for her groundbreaking Roma feminist political theatre, having written three plays by the age of 29. She debuted as a filmmaker with "Letter of Forgiveness" (2019), the first film about Roma slavery written and directed from a Roma perspective. Her subsequent works include the short film "I Matter" (2021) and a series of documentaries about institutionalized children. In 2020, she won the Best Actress Award at the German Actors Guild Awards and was a Best Actress nominee at the German Film Awards for her role in "Gipsy Queen" (2019). In 2024, she was named Chevalier of the Arts by the President of Romania. Alina is currently developing her debut feature, "I Matter", based on the short film.
