As the days pass by, it becomes clear that Doru is pursuing an investigation. Alongside his mother’s rowdy dog, Amza, he is shadowing his wife around town, trying to uncover the possibilities of her betrayal.

Synopsis: The annual vacation of a bunch of 70-year-old ladies. Far from men and the madness of daily life, Cica, Nana and their friends isolate themselves voluntarily in a villa in the countryside. Together they blend joie de vivre and memories, melancholia and joyfulness, gossip and jokes. All that to keep up the illusion that time has not passed, that they are still the same attractive girls they were 50 years ago.

Synopsis: A dead monk’s gaze is hypnotizing the masses, becomes a very profitable brand and is about to be sanctified by the Romanian church. Following in Arsenie’s footsteps, we embark on a fictionalized pilgrimage, that leads us – with humour and fantasy – through our present confusion and global fears. No afterlife guaranteed.

Soldiers. Story from Ferentari (2017) directed by Ivana Mladenovic

Synopsis: Adi (40), a shy and introverted anthropologist, who got recently dumped by his girlfriend, moves to Ferentari, the poorest and most notorious neighborhood of Bucharest. He wants to write a study on manele music, the ‘pop music’ of the Roma community. Manele music serves as a way out of poverty for some successful musicians, but more often it’s just another opportunity for the mafia pimps to make money off their acts and keep them in slave-like dependency. While researching this subject, Adi meets Alberto, a Roma ex-convict and a bear of a man, who promises Adi to help him. Soon enough, the unlikely pair begins a playful romance in which Adi feeds Alberto with improbable plans of escaping poverty, while Alberto feeds Adi with phrases of love. Little by little, their casual affair grows into love. And the funny and sweet teasing turns into something precarious, since Alberto is both dangerous and fragile and belongs to a world whose codes Adi doesn’t understand.

The Happiest Girl in the World (2009) directed by Radu Jude

Synopsis: Delia, a young Romanian girl, comes to Bucharest with her parents to collect a prize she has won in a contest organized by a soft-drinks company. The prize is a beautiful new car. All Delia has to do now is appear in front of the camera in a commercial. All goes well until it becomes clear that Delia and her parents have very different ideas about what to do with the new car. Meanwhile, the contest’s sponsor needs a radiant prize-winner with a gleaming smile. A wicked satire and a psychological portrait of a society perverted by its slavery to capitalism and consumerism.

Everybody in Our Family (2012) directed by Radu Jude

Synopsis: Marius is a divorced man in his late thirties. His five year-old daughter Sofia lives with her mother, which causes Marius a deep frustration. On the day Marius arrives to take his daughter on their annual holiday, he is told that she is ill but he doesn’t believe it and insists to take her with him. The situation soon gets out of control with all the family taking part in a web of humor, violence, childish songs, police interventions and love statements.

Synopsis: Emanuel spends his days at a sanatorium. Falling in love with another patient, he narrates his and his fellow patients’ attempts to live life to the fullest as their bodies slowly fade away, but their minds refuse to give up.

Aferim! (2015) directed by Radu Jude

Synopsis: Set in early 19th century Wallachia, when a local policeman, Costandin, is hired by Iordache, a boyar (local noble), to find Carfin, a Gypsy slave who had run away from the boyar’s estate after having an affair with his wife, Sultana. Costandin sets out to find the fugitive, beginning a journey full of adventures. Gypsy slavery lasted from the 14th century up until the middle of the 19th century, a situation which is very little known and almost nonexistent in the public debate today, although its impact continues to influence Romania’s social life.

Synopsis: During the 1980s, Radio Free Europe was the secret relief and confidant of its Romanian listeners. The Radio was Ceauşescu’s most important enemy; he even hired Carlos the Jackal to close it down. All the protagonists of this story confront themselves once more in Cold Waves: radio anchors, along with terrorists, listeners as well as party and Securitate officials. If you listen to these voices, you may get a better picture.

Synopsis: Ani and Sanda are two girls from Maramures who grew up with their grandparents. Their parents are working in Spain, like so many other Romanians. When they left, their common project looked promising: with the money earned in Spain they shall build a house in which the whole family will be happy. After more than 10 years, things haven’t turned out as planned, and the big house is far from being finished. Laura Capatana-Juller accompanied Ani and Sanda for three years, following with a tender and talented eye the struggles of these two girls turned into teenagers while their parents were away. This will be her first documentary feature. A film on a global issue through the microscope of direct cinema.
